"The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat." ~ Mark 6:30-31 ESV
As we read farther in this passage, neither Jesus nor his disciples actually got to rest, eat and refresh. People saw them and followed them and intercepted them on their way. The miracle of feeding the five thousand soon followed.
However, it is important to take a look at Jesus' word in this passage. Earlier in this passage Jesus had commissioned the twelve disciples, sending them out two by two to preach the message of repentance. It tells us that Jesus empowered with "authority over the unclean spirits." (Mark 6:7b). They "cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them." (Mark 6:13). It goes without saying that they were likely exhausted. Jesus recognized this and invited them to rest.
Every year our pastors invite our church into a time of rest. You're welcome to join us!
